“The Boiler Shop” is re sharing this post by Weld Australia titled; The Demise of Australian Manufacturing & the Impact of COVID-19 In this article by Weld Australia a historical account is given how manufacturing has played a key role for providing employment opportunities for many Australian workers in throughout previous generations. ![]() The article talks about the golden years of the manufacturing sector as it contributed to 25% of the employed workforce. Due to so called efficiencies and the streamlining of our labour forces, decisions were made to slowly shift our manufacturing skills off shore in the 1970’s and by 1980 the total number of Australians employed in the manufacturing sector had been reduced to 19%. Fast forward to today and we are down to a dismal 5.4%of the Australian Workforce. Comments are also made that even though the COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster we hope that on the other side there may be a silver lining on the horizon for Australian manufacturing. Glen Jones from theboilershop.com.au demonstrates with the use of a pair of dividers and a straight edge how to bisect an arc. This fabrication Training bisect a given angle video was made to assist metal fabricators in the workplace with fabrication training tips and advice. You can also view one of me other Fabrication Training videos from the list below.

Glen believes these skills should be upheld and maintained by all metal fabricators. It doesn’t matter whether you are a sheet metal worker, a platter, boilermaker, fabricator or an iron worker. These geometric construction techniques should be passionately pursued to maintain the intellectual knowledge when it comes to marking out on sheet plate surfaces. Geometric development and marking out skills are not just required by metal fabricators on the shop floor but are also a valuable tool which can be used by programmers and CNC operators who operate CNC cutting equipment such as Laser cutters, Plasma Cutters & water jet cutters. The best programmers and operators of CNC cutting equipment are fabricators from the shop floor who have learnt CAD skills and can use their intellectual trade knowledge to push design limits to the edge. With the outbreak of the COVID19 virus and the impact on the fabrication industry let’s create Onshoring by up skilling our fabrication workforce. All of the basic fabrication skills need to be brought back into fabrication training, let us create the foundation and then move into understanding CAD systems and CNC programing. The greater the knowledge and skills that tradesman can become equipped with the greater chance we have to “MAKE THE FABRICATION TRADE GREAT AGAIN”. You may find this video useful if you are working in the Fabrication trade or related engineering trades.
There may also be a use for such a tool in many engineering workshops where it is required to capture evidence for traceability recording. Engineering Traceability The GoPro mounted to dial indicator assists with capturing evidence for identifying that the correct work sequence is being followed. The camera can be mounted above workers so it is not intrusive or can be used up close so specific evidence can be captured. The GoPro mounted to dial indicator can capture video or can take time lapse still photos over a set period. The advantage of time lapse photos is that less hard drive space will be required than if the go pro was recording video. This is the same if storing to a cloud as opposed to physical hard drive. Take note that the GoPro Hero 8 can live stream so these images can be sent straight to the cloud as the engineering work is taking place. Additional use for such a tool is that once the images are captured the digital files can be reviewed to improve sequence of tasks, this will provide ways to streamline the manufacturing process. Training videos can also be produced to reflect required in house changes & improvements to production. This training video was made in house by North Metro TAFE lecturing staff. The GoPro mount to the magnetic base of a dial indicator was made to assist Fabrication & Welding staff with their training delivery. The magnetic base is useful for attaching a GoPro camera to various types of fixed plant machinery and gives an up close perspective that can be discussed in class. The advantages of such a tool can provide a close view of cutting and mechanical movements of machinery which assist students in understanding cutting and bending processes. The GoPro mounted to dial indicator also assists in regard to safe work practises on specific machinery through classroom discussion around potential issues such as crushing & pinch points before the live work takes place. In this Blog Glen Jones from www.theboilershop.com.au shows off one of his latest digital downloads for Laser Cutting. Enhance gates and fence panels. This is one of the laser cutting dxf digital downloads that I am offering via my web site www.theboilershop.com.au Small Weld in features SF11 & SF12 are designs which I have created to help people enhance traditional wrought iron gates and fence panels. These designs are drafted and created using CAD software. I provide assembly videos, pdf sketch for dimensions, Cut list for laser cutting. To access this information follow these steps.
1. go to www.theboilershop.com.au 2. click on the drop down menu and find SF11 or SF12 3. The next page provides all options for each design Regards Glen Jones www.theboilershop.com.au In this Video Glen Jones from the Boiler Shop.com.au shows how to twist square bar using thermal heating equipment and a jig built for the task. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cutting has revolutionised the metal fabrication and welding industry. Common CNC cutting methods used by fabricators are laser cutting, plasma cutting, or water jet cutting. Laser cutting is the preferred CNC cutting method for most fabricators. To read more about the advantages and disadvantages of the different CNC cutting processes you will be able to read more soon on my Blogg page. My intention for The Boiler Shop (TBS) is to provide a go to place for fabricators, welders & hobbyists to access and download DXF files & assembly videos which can be used for creative artistic fabrication applications. All the DXF files that you will be able to obtain from TBS have been designed by me. Refer to the youtube video on the home page which will display a lot of my work and the products that I intend to make available to download. Laser cutting is my preferred method of CNC cutting and some of the intricate items that I have designed I will ONLY recommend laser cutting. Some items that I have designed the plasma cutting process can be used as the accuracy of the finished item is not as important. You can read more on this topic soon on my Blogg page. We are in exciting times in the fabrication industry; the CNC landscape holds tremendous opportunity for young tradespeople. CNC skills are not just restricted to high speed cutting applications; the skills are also transferable into CNC bending and rolling equipment as well as robotic applications. With Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software readily available and CNC cutting equipment becoming more affordable there is an increasing demand for fabricators with skills to operate and use CNC equipment. 3d printing applications are also becoming more widely used, but don’t get me started on that we will keep that discussion for another day.
