Fabrication Training – Find 90° up from a horizontal line

7/4/2020

Glen Jones from theboilershop.com.au demonstrates with the use of a pair of dividers and a straight edge how to find 90° from a horizontal base line. These training tips are designed to assist metal fabricators in the workplace with fabrication training tips and advice.
These marking out skills are geometric construction techniques which are a dying art for the metal fabrication trade. Glen believes these skills should be upheld and maintained by all metal fabricators. It doesn’t matter whether you are a sheet metal worker, a platter, boilermaker, fabricator or an iron worker. These geometric construction techniques should passionately pursued to maintain the intellectual knowledge when it comes to marking out on sheet plate surfaces.
Geometric development and marking out skills are not just required by metal fabricators on the shop floor but are also a valuable tool which can be used by programmers and CNC operators who operate CNC cutting equipment such as Laser cutters, Plasma Cutters & water jet cutters.
The best programmers and operators of CNC cutting equipment are fabricators from the shop floor who have learnt CAD skills and can use their intellectual trade knowledge to push design limits to the edge.
With the outbreak of the COVID19 virus and the impact on the fabrication industry let’s create Onshoring by up skilling our fabrication workforce. All of the basic fabrication skills need to be brought back into fabrication training, lets create the foundation and then move into understanding CAD systems and CNC programing. The more tradesmen we have who understand these two elements the more better chance have to “MAKE THE FABRICATION TRADE GREAT AGAIN”.

Background of The Boiler Shop
Visit my website and discover dxf downloads that you can download and fabricate. Some of my designs enhance traditional wrought iron architectural work. I have a range of other items which I intend to digitize and introduce and make available to download later in 2020.
I have previously designed, fabricated and assembled many functional cool items which you can see via my gallery link on my web page. It excites me when I know that some of my design work has ended up in places such as Toronto, Milwaukee, Ottawa & Sydney.
For me it is so enjoyable having someone end up with one of my design pieces end up in different corners of the globe.

Welding Boiler end plates on model train locomotive

This simple video show the finished weld of the boiler end plates.
The end Plate is 3mm which sits on 80 Nominal Bore pipe, the wall thicknes of pipe is of a similar thicknes. Note there is a second 3mm plate tack welded into the inside of the pipe. The second plate has the same hole pattern as the external plate with slightly smaller hole diameter, this gives the front view of the locomotive a stronger  presence.

Note these plates were welded using the GTAW process, you choose the process you want to weld with which is dependant on skill level, for secondary school students i fing the GMAW / Mig process to be more appropriate. Only use tig welding to weld up the locomotive if the student has the skillset to do so.
