Glen Jones created the boiler shop for Fabricators, Welders & Hobbyists to be able to download, cut, assemble & weld functional cool metal projects.
You may wish to download and make a panel feature for a gate, a shelf bracket or a welding assembly table. Try the free stuff first (see the link at the bottom of this page). Go to www.theboileshop.com.au click on the project you are interested in and access the photo gallery, technical drawings, and instructional youtube videos on how to assemble. The key documents are the DXF files which are drafted in AutoCAD 2D, the DXF files are what you will need to download and use to be able to cut out the required shapes. All DXF files can be purchased via the link on my web page, just follow the links. For Frequently Asked Questions regarding dxf files scroll to the bottom of this page. When watching the video for a particular item take note of what tools are being used. “Evaluate if this is at your skill level”.
Note all free items and all purchased items from The Boiler Shop are not physical items, they are as mentioned above, electronic files to assist anyone who wants to cut, fabricate and weld these cool metal projects that you will not find anywhere else.
CNC high speed cutting equipment options – The DXF files are required to carry out the cutting on Laser cutting equipment. (see the FAQ section below on CNC high speed cutting equipment).
Whether you are a Hobbyist that is looking for a cool welding project or a seasoned welder or fabricator that wants to download and start cutting challenging and meaningful metal work exercises. The Boiler Shop is the place where you can download, assemble & weld heaps of projects that will help your fabrication and welding skill level grow. At the end you will have a physical item which you put together with your hands and can be proud of.
Glen Jones has been in the metal fabrication and welding industry for over 30 years as a boilermaker and as an instructor training apprentices. We hope you find an exercise that appeals to you.
Please Help, share your finished work; #theboilershop #dxfdownload I would love to see my designs in all countries and all over the web. Please help me by sharing these hash tags on Instagram, facebook or whatever socials you use. Thanks heaps, Glen.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
DXF Files – DXF stands for stands for "Drawing interchange/eXchange Format." The format interprets information from a drawing so that the tooling used to cut the component can follow the required pathway. For example CNC Laser cutting machines follow the required pathway to cut a shape. A
CNC lathe follows the required pathway to machine a component to a specific size.
CNC High speed cutting equipment – Most machines used for high speed cutting by metal fabricators are Plasma cutters, laser cutters, Water jet cutters and to a lesser extent CNC Thermal cutting machines. The Bullet point below shows some advantage and some disadvantages of each process.
Plasma Cutter
Laser Cutter
Water jet Cutter
Thermal Cutting machine
What steps are involved once I have obtained the dxf file?
Once you have obtained the DXF file or files and placed them onto a thumb / flash drive the file can be altered in the appropriate tool path software to generate the required g code. A laser cutting company in your local area can do this for you, all you need to do is provide them with the appropriate dxf file and cut list information. Another option is maybe you work with someone who has these skills and can perform this task for you.

Plasma Cutter
- Cheaper than laser
- Can cut ferrous & Nonferrous metals
- Slag / Dross left behind after cut so cleaning is required.
- Not as accurate as laser
Laser Cutter
- No cleaning required after cut.
- Neater cut
- Can cut ferrous & Nonferrous metals
- More expensive than Plasma Cutting
Water jet Cutter
- Can cut all metals, and many other materials.
- Minimal cleaning required.
- I have found thin metals to chatter and move during cutting, which produces a secondary finish when compared to laser.
- More expensive than laser.
Thermal Cutting machine
- Only used for cutting carbon steel on thicknesses above the limits of plasma cutter ie 20mm +
